My life flashed before my eyes as the elevator carried us towards my penthouse apartment. News headlines and shared Facebook articles from âfriendsâ all swirled around my head. Where do we even start? I wondered. Where do we even start?
I unlocked my apartment door and let us in. I tossed my jacket on the couch and opened my wine refrigerator (because yes, I have one, and yes, it has a few bottles of $3 Trader Joeâs wine, donât judge me). I poured a tall glass and he just waited, leaning up against the counter.
âYou didnât say a word.â I stared down at my drink. âNot one thing. For two days. Not a word.â
He nodded his head. He pushed himself off of the white quartz countertop and headed over to me. Brushing my hair off of my shoulder, his hands fell down my arms. âThis is going to be heavy.â
I turned my body and looked up at him. âI can handle heavy.â I mean, I could, right? Just for good measure, I took a solid, deep, restorative breath in.
âAfter Sarah ...â He trailed off and I wondered if the word Sarah was always going to hurt him when he spoke it. âAfter Sarah, I never imagined I would ever find someone else again.â He looked at me finally. He looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time. âI never imagined Iâd find someone like you.â His eyes followed my hair down to my shoulder and across my collar bone. Heat rose in my cheeks.
âBut here you are.â His eyes finally met mine again. âHere you are and youâre beautiful. And funny. And smart. And I started to think that I could find my life again with you.â His fingers tightened in mine.
His fingers tightened and all I could think about was his words were in past tense.
âI came out of a splenectomy and my phone was actually one fire. People I hadnât spoken to since med school were hounding me for information.â He shook his head and looked at the ceiling and gulped my wine. âAnd they all said the same thing.â He cleared his throat. âItâs about time youâve moved on.â
And just ... ouch. Iâll admit that one kind of stung a little. He looked like some kind of wounded rabbit and I wanted to feel sorry for him, but I was also a little wounded.
His hands rubbed the back of his neck. âI took two days. Two days to wonder and decide whether or not I was truly over her loss.â His eyes found mine again and I wondered.
Was he really over her? Over her loss? Over what they couldâve had?
His hands found mine again. âIâll always love her and the baby, Grace. Iâll always love what we had. Cherish it. Respect it. But that doesnât mean Iâm not ready to move forward.â He kissed my forehead, and then my nose. And then my lips. âForward with you.â His tongue licked at my bottom lip, and he whispered, âIf youâll still have me.
